Two bikers blow through the right-turn lane, and cut in front of me

I was about to honk, and then didn’t. It was then I realized they were both Hells Angels, and not honking was a good decision.

Nothing would’ve really gone wrong, I just prefer to not attract any kind of attention from actual gangs....

I had one of those moments just now. Biker blasted past me changing lanes through an intersection...was going to honk then I noticed the only thing on his bike besides him was a well used baseball bat strapped near his neg. Nope.

I honked once at a Hells Angel. It was before I noticed he was a Hells Angel. He flipped me off, I flipped him off. He drove off, which was when I noticed that he was a Hells Angel. A little bit of pee tinkered into my underwear, naturally.

99.999% of these guys are posers. Not that you should take the risk with the other .001%.

In what area? To my knowledge, BC has a very different ratio of posers to actual Hells Angels. Especially the city I'm in.

Some of the teamsters we have on shows are hells angles. They park on the loading docks and do what they want. I don’t mess with them, one was a Marine too so I have some friendly contact with them.

I yelled at a lady trying to cut off me in a merge with her gloried Ferd Edge. I have too many road rage stories. One time I threw reverse when a box truck was way too close to my bumper. Gave a nice middle finger to salute.

I’m not terribly scared if it’s only a few. My car weighs about 3,500 pounds. If I’m going at 45 mph, physics are not in a motorcyclists’ favor.

I knew guys that carried a handful of ball bearings in their vests. They wouldn’t do anything over a simple honk, but if it was a particularly nasty, aggressive driver, trying to run them off the road or something... well at highway speeds those big bearings are like buckshot.

Nice. If you can find some common ground they are usually actually decent guys. I used to ride in a sportbike club and there’s a sort of an unwritten rule that the Hells Angels have jurisdiction over ALL the clubs that operate within their territory. So we used to have to go pay tribute every once in a while. Nothing serious, just stop in and say hey, how ya doin. Let them know if we had any issues with anyone else out there. And likewise I would assume they would let us know if they had issues with us. But they never did, which I consider a good thing. Club riding was a kind of a strange world and after I moved I stopped associating myself with motorcycle clubs.

Well if it was a doofus on a chopper with no front brakes, it could be that they did that because of the shitty rear-only braking ability their shitty bikes have.

Your post reminded me to get an update on a City of Toronto Noise bylaw review that included how to go about ticketing motorcyclists with loud pipes.

Apparently there was an update from last February that said that the current noise bylaw was sufficient to achieve that.

So... just fired off an email with that info to my local Councillor.

There is one motorcyclist with loud pipes who lives on my street. Though I don’t hear them often, I’m thinking I should start putting in complaints about it to my local councilor and to local police until they start taking some proper action.

Huh? How does that work? If he just throws them at the car then the relative speed is still pretty low?

Wait what? Your non an auto enthusiast site where 90% of us enjoy modifying our vehicles including exhaust kits and you wanna complain about a guys bike? You said it doesn't happen often so why bother giving the guy shit for it. If he's not hurting you or blasting up and down the street in a low gear all the time just let him be. Christ I'm glad I don't live in Canada if you guys are all NIMBYs like that.

Not that guy specifically. But in my area, in the summer, I have to hear the loud pipes on a very regular basis. It’s not one rider/bike. But when you add up all the motorcyclists with the straight pipes, it becomes a constant and regular thing.

And you’re missing the point. There are noise bylaws that have been on the books for a long time that have gone unenforced. I’m simply looking to have existing laws (which limits the noise to 85db... Which is still pretty loud) enforced at least some of the time instead of never being enforced.

As for it not hurting me... That line of reasoning is bullshit. There are noise regulations. Why should one class of motorists get a free pass?

Motorcyclists like most car owners should have proper exhaust installed... Not fucking straight unmuffled pipes.

So just because I want an existing bylaw enforced at least some of the time doesn’t make me a nimby. And I have nothing against mods... As long long as those mods are legal and don’t voilate existing noise laws.

Are you one of those straight-pipe noise making jackasses who are part of the problem? If so, then fuck you... You attention seeking asshole.

Straight pipes? Nah I got a stock muffler on my bike and my z. I just don't get bothered enough by a few guys making noise to go complain to the cops or council. Also how exactly do you plan on checking the Db of the bikes? If there is an 85 limit you would need evidence that the exhaust is above that meaning you'd need to outfit the police with noise measuring equipment. And if there's a group of motorcycles what are the cops supposed to do pull everyone over, make them shut down their bikes, and start them individually to get noise measurements? Noise regs aren't usually enforced because the hassle of enforcing them is hardly ever worth the effort.

“Straight pipes? Nah I got a stock muffler on my bike and my z.”

Good.

“Also how exactly do you plan on checking the Db of the bikes?”

This is how they do it in Calgary:

http://globalnews.ca/news/1485453/p…

And if they can do that in Calgary, they can do it in Toronto.

“And if there’s a group of motorcycles what are the cops supposed to do”

Pick the one or some of the noisier ones in the group and nail ‘em. And warn everyone else in the group that straight pipes will get you a fine.

FYI... the AMA even has an AMA-sanctioned motorcycle noise test that anyone can do themselves:

And the equipment needed doesn’t have to be expensive either:

There’s probably more relative speed than you’d think. The “buckshot” claim is a bit of hyperbole, I shouldn’t have insinuated that it was on the same order as firing a gun at a car. But it would definitely spiderweb up a windshield and scare the bejeezus out of the driver.
